A Heart for the Aetas

Maribeth Blanco Lucero

UFPCS Communication Head

Envoy, Aeta Community Outreach Mission

Highland Province of Quirino, Philippines

Here at United Filipino People's Convention in Singapore, we see the value in everyone. We want to be a catalyst for positive change. We have been driven by the same ideas we initially founded our Social Services Organization upon: support, empowerment, and progress.

One of the reasons why I joined UFPCS is because of my passion to help.

I grew up in the highland province of Quirino where there is little technology and where access to the government services is very difficult. Quirino is also where the native Aeta community lives.

I decided to travel to Manila and eventually reached Singapore (living my family behind) because of my determination to succeed despite the lack of strong educational background.

It has been a very challenging but fruitful 15 years of living in Singapore, but only through UFPCS that I found the avenue to return to our community (in Quirino) and to finally give back to the native Aeta community. I witnessed the life, struggles, and fate of our Filipino Aeta brothers and sisters when I was young.

They have very limited resources to earn for a living and as such, they are forced to deprive themselves of education because they have to prioritize their survival.

To me, education is the vital key to success and I do believe that they have the right to education. With UFPCS, I was able to fulfill my lifelong mission to help them and to share with them the blessings that everyone deserve.

There were a lot of things I learned during the outreach program. I stand  before the Aeta Community on behalf of UFPCS and saw the simplest but most important thing about them - they can smile despite the poverty they face - and they can do this because they stand united as a family and I am happy to at least show to them that there is still Hope.

Though I am not rich and well established in life, I know that in my own little ways, I made a small difference to our Aeta brothers and sisters. I hope to be an inspiration to you and this is my story-line.
